What Is Bilibili, and How Does It Compare to YouTube?
Understand Bilibili Global, its distinctive danmu comments, and how its audience, culture, discovery and creator tools compare with YouTube.
If you spend time around anime, gaming or technology communities, you may have encountered Bilibili—often called “B站” (B-zhàn) by its Chinese audience. It is sometimes described as “China’s YouTube,” but that shortcut misses the community culture and viewing experience that make it distinct.
What is Bilibili?
Bilibili is a video-sharing and entertainment platform founded in Shanghai in 2009. It originally grew around ACG culture—anime, comics and games—before expanding into technology, music, education, lifestyle video, live streaming, mobile games and original animation.
Its largest audience remains in China, while Bilibili also operates international services for anime and entertainment audiences. The platform combines creator uploads, licensed programming, live communities and a visual comment system that changes how watching feels.
What is Bilibili Global?
Bilibili Global is the international-facing Bilibili experience available through bilibili.tv and supported mobile apps. It focuses heavily on licensed anime and Asian entertainment, with subtitles and availability that differ by country. It should not be assumed to contain the same catalog, community features or account experience as the mainland-China platform at bilibili.com.
The international service retains Bilibili’s community identity, but content rights, subscriptions, languages and app availability are regional. Before subscribing, check that the shows and features you want are offered in your location.
What makes danmu different?
Danmu (弹幕), sometimes translated as “bullet comments,” places timestamped audience messages directly over the video. Instead of sending every reaction to a comment section below the player, danmu lets viewers encounter jokes, explanations and reactions at the moment they relate to.
The result can feel closer to watching with a lively audience, even when a video was uploaded long ago. YouTube offers live chat for livestreams and premieres, but its ordinary uploaded videos use a conventional comment area rather than a native, synchronized overlay.
Bilibili is not simply a smaller YouTube. It represents a different watching culture, where audience reactions can become part of the video experience itself.
Bilibili compared with YouTube
Both platforms support video publishing and audience building, but their reach, culture, business models and creator ecosystems are different.

Which platform fits you?
Think of audience fit before revenue
For creators outside China, Bilibili can be a supplementary distribution and audience-learning channel, particularly for anime, gaming, technology and adjacent interests. YouTube remains the more established choice for global reach and clearly documented monetization. Check rights, localization needs and each service’s current creator terms before cross-posting.
It does not have to be either-or
Bilibili can complement YouTube when you want anime-focused discovery or a more communal, reaction-rich experience. YouTube remains difficult to replace for broad tutorials, music, news and general entertainment because of the size and diversity of its catalog.
Check the version available in your region
Bilibili has offered different apps and services outside mainland China. Availability, libraries, subscriptions and features can vary by country. Confirm the developer, store description and regional availability before installing or subscribing.
