Why Isn't the Border Light App Working on My Android Phone?
Fix a border light app that is not working on Android by checking overlay permission, battery restrictions, notification access, screen shape and device compatibility.
A border light app usually fails because Android is restricting one of the things it needs. The most common causes are missing overlay permission, battery optimization, notification access, incompatible screen settings, or a conflict with another app.
“Display over other apps” is turned off
Many border light apps draw an animated layer above the home screen or another application. Android blocks that behaviour until you approve the special overlay permission.
Settings → Apps → Special app access → Display over other apps
Find the border lighting app and allow the permission. On some phones the control may be called Appear on top, Draw over other apps, Display pop-up windows, or something similar. Use Settings search if the exact path is different.
Battery saving or notification access is stopping it
Allow reliable background activity
Android may close the app to reduce battery use, especially after the screen locks or the app has been idle. Open the app information page, choose Battery, then try Unrestricted or Don't optimize. Some manufacturers also provide an Auto-start or Background activity switch.
Settings → Apps → Border Lighting → Battery
Unrestricted access may use more battery. Enable it only when the effect repeatedly stops, then observe your battery use for a day.
Notification lighting needs notification access
If the border should react to incoming messages, calls or alerts, the app may need notification access. Search Settings for Notification access and enable it only for the app you selected. A wallpaper-only border may not need this permission.
Notification access can expose notification content, including private messages, email previews and one-time codes. Read the app's explanation and privacy disclosure before allowing it.
Accessibility access or built-in edge lighting may be involved
Do not approve Accessibility automatically
Some apps ask for an Accessibility Service to detect screen changes or keep an effect active. This is a sensitive permission because an accessibility service can potentially observe interface content and interact with the screen. Turn it on only when the feature genuinely requires it, the developer clearly explains why, and you trust the app.
Check for your phone's own edge-light feature
Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo, Realme and other brands may include notification or edge-light controls. The native effect can conflict with a third-party overlay, or it may already provide the result you want without another app. Search Display, Lock screen, Notifications, Always On Display, Wallpaper or Personalization for terms such as edge lighting, notification light or light effect.
Try using only one lighting system at a time. Disable the native effect briefly while testing the third-party app, or choose the built-in option and remove the overlay app.
Phone compatibility, screen-off limits and display shape
Android is customized heavily by phone manufacturers. An app that stays active on one Samsung or Pixel may be restricted on a Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo or Realme phone. App updates and Android system updates can also change how overlays and background services behave.
The effect may not run while the screen is off
Some apps can decorate the home screen, lock screen or a live wallpaper but cannot draw continuously after the display turns fully off. Always On Display support is separate and depends on the phone, Android version and implementation. Test the app first with the screen on and unlocked.
Match the border to the notch or camera hole
Open the app's screen-shape controls and adjust notch width, camera-hole position, corner radius, border width, top offset and bottom offset. Incorrect values can make the effect:
- hide behind the camera hole
- appear in the wrong position
- show on only part of the screen
- leave visible gaps at the corners
Another overlay is conflicting, or the app is not configured
Temporarily disable other software that draws over the screen: blue-light filters, floating tools, game overlays, chat bubbles, screen dimmers, other edge-light apps and some accessibility utilities. Then reopen the border light app and test again.
Installing the app does not necessarily activate an effect. Open its main screen and verify the master border-light switch, notification lighting, animation style, color, thickness, screen position, charging effect and lock-screen options. If it uses a live wallpaper, confirm that the wallpaper was actually applied.
What to try when the border light still does not appear
- Restart the phone, then open the border light app again.
- Make sure the app's main light or wallpaper feature is switched on.
- Allow Display over other apps if the chosen effect needs an overlay.
- Enable notification access only if the light must react to notifications.
- Change the app's battery setting if Android keeps stopping it.
- Temporarily turn off other overlay, filter or lighting apps.
- Correct the notch, camera-hole, corner and screen-position settings.
- Update the app from Google Play and install available Android updates.
- Clear the app cache or reset its settings, then configure the effect again.
If none of these steps works, the current version of the app may not support your particular phone or Android build. Contact the developer with the phone model, Android version and a clear description of when the effect disappears.
How to install and review a border light app
- Open Google Play and search for the exact app name.
- Check the developer, recent reviews, update history and Data safety section.
- Install the app, open it and select a border style before approving extra access.
- Grant only the permissions needed by the feature you will actually use.
- Return to Android Settings later and remove permissions you no longer need.
| Permission | When it may make sense | Why to be careful |
|---|---|---|
| Display over other apps | For an edge overlay above other screens | It can place content over other applications |
| Notification access | For effects triggered by new alerts | It may expose private notification content |
| Accessibility | Only for a clearly explained accessibility-dependent feature | It can observe and interact with parts of the interface |
| Photos or media | When you choose your own wallpaper | Prefer limited photo access when Android offers it |
Edge Lighting - Borderlight on Google Play
The supplied Play Store link currently opens Edge Lighting - Borderlight by ZipoApps. Its listing describes customizable border colors, animation speed, width, corner radius, notch controls, wallpapers and display-over-other-apps support. Features, compatibility, permissions and data practices can change, so review the live listing before installation.
Install from the official Google Play page
Read the current Data safety information and recent reviews, then give the app only the access needed for your chosen lighting feature.
Open Google PlayFix the permissions first, then test compatibility
If a border light app is not working, start with the in-app switch, Display over other apps and battery settings. Add notification access only for notification-triggered effects, and treat Accessibility as a sensitive permission rather than a routine requirement.
If the border remains missing or misaligned after correcting the notch and screen-shape controls, your phone's software may be limiting the app. A built-in edge-light or Always On Display option is usually the simpler alternative when one is available.
